The rivalry of two manufacturers of heavy equipment from Russia and Belarus sometimes acquires bizarre forms. Today, the Belarusian automaker MAZ is quite seriously losing to his Kama competitor. But there is one segment where KAMAZ has shown explicitly to Belarusians.

Today, one of the main trends in the development of cargo and passenger machinery in the country — gasomotorization. This priority is due primarily not only by the presence of a huge natural base of this type of fossil. It is also believed that natural gas is an eco-friendly fuel type. When it is combustion, solid particles and other harmful substances are not formed as in the diesel.

But besides the use of compressed natural gas (CPG), a very promising direction is the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as motor fuel on motor vehicles.

Liquefied methane (natural gas), in comparison with CPG, has two important advantages.

Technique on liquefied natural gas, compared with compresented possesses two advantages: less curly weight, therefore, less loss in capacity / passenger capacity, and large stroke stock. But the only obstacle to the widespread use of LNG is the underdevelopment of infrastructure of refueling. Such technique simply nowhere to refuel.

However, the situation gradually begins to change. The Gazprom and NOVATEK industrial giants have developed a program and started the construction of a network of cryogenic car refueling stations (cryoazs). The feature of these programs is the construction of such gas stations in separate regions (pilot projects) and along the main highways of the country. According to experts, by 2030, the main vehicle will consume up to a third of the entire LNG volume produced in Russia.

Maz already has a tractor model with two crystacations and a stroke of 700 km. The model is called MAZ-54A02K. The tractor is equipped with a 400-power engine Weichai Power WP12NG 400E50 Euro-5 level (2K in the model index — it is) and a mechanical 16-speed ZF 16S2520 to gearbox. Two cryogenic tanks for liquefied methane — production of the American company Chart, their total volume is 755 liters (405 + 350 L). In fact, the model is designed for the Russian market.

The spread of LNG is also planned on passenger transport. And the MAZ is ready for this. The serial release of such equipment has already begun. In April 2019, the MAZ manufactured prototype of 12 meter and 9 meter buses operating on LNG. The Minsk Automobile Plant became the first in the CIS countries, which created such cars and officially received on them. In May, buses arrived in Chelyabinsk for testing.

Why Chelyabinsk? Everything is simple, in Metallurgical Chelyabinsk as part of the implementation of the «Clean Air» program, it was decided to purchase urban buses both on a compressed (compressed) natural gas and liquefied. And Minsk car facilities took part in this project. But if the competition for buses on the CPG won Liaz, then in the second competition, the winner was recognized as MAZ. At the end of last year, 33 buses were supplied from Minsk on liquefied methane. And in nefhaz there is only a prototype. Recall that KAMAZ last autumn at the ComTrans-2019 exhibition in Moscow presented an experienced model of NEFAZ-5299-40-57 on LNG. However, it is still to be tested, and then the certification procedure. That is, by and large, playing for ahead, the MAZ received an advantage: when Chelyabinsk announced the tender not to supply buses on a liquefied natural gas, competitors simply did not have the required technique.

By the way, Minsk residents want to bypass such a clause of our legislation. Subsidies for the acquisition are allocated only when purchasing Russian LIAZ buses, nefases, Volgobus. Therefore, in order to circumvent this legislative obstacle, it will be necessary to localize the release of masses in the Russian Federation. The project is plans to organize in the Chelyabinsk Region (Miass) joint production of Belarusian buses operating on liquefied gas.

In addition, the demand for buses running on liquefied methane begins to grow in Europe. And the Minsk Automobile Plant, which received a trump card in the form of a third generation bus, is now quite seriously considering this perspective.

The MAZ-203945 supplied to Chelyabinsk is the first model in the line of passenger machinery of the Minsk Automobile Plant, working on a liquefied natural gas (LNG). Instead of cylinders on the roof, the bus is equipped with a crystal, which is located in the rear breath. The geometric volume of the crystal — 350 l, effective — 300 liters. It accommodates 120-130 kg of liquefied gas. This amount of fuel provides a stroke of about 400 km when moving in the city cycle.

Another difference between the MAZ-203945 bus from the fellows, working on a compressed gas, is the engine.

If the first is used by the German gas Mercedes-Benz M 906 LAG EEV / 1-02 (P6, 6883 cubic sm; 278 hp; 1000 nm; Euro-5), then on MAZ-203945 — Chinese gas Weichai WP7NG 280E51 (In the future, the «MAZ-Waiti» of the same model will be installed). This motor is also an inline 6-cylinder, with turbocharging and cooled air cooled, with a distributed gas injection and spark ignition. It has a working volume of 7470 ccm, power is 270 hp, the maximum torque is 1100 nm and corresponds to the EURO-5 environmental standard.
